Being a “graduating” 5th grade student at Coronado Elementary comes with many exciting traditions and bonus rites of passage — and one of the most anticipated is the annual Boat Races!

Fifth grade students work in teams to design and construct their own boats using only cardboard and duct tape. After planning and building their creations, students head to the South High pool to put their engineering skills to the test in exciting team races.

The goal? Cross the finish line before the boat sinks!

The event is filled with laughter, teamwork, creativity, and plenty of splashes. Students cheer each other on while spectators enthusiastically support the racers from poolside. Some boats glide smoothly across the water, while others quickly become part of the pool — making the races entertaining for everyone involved.

The Boat Races are a fun and memorable experience that celebrates teamwork, problem-solving, and the excitement of finishing elementary school at Coronado!
